How the Parish Council works

Chacewater Parish Council is an elected local authority. It makes decisions at properly convened Council or committee meetings, in accordance with legislation, Standing Orders, and policies formally adopted by the Council.

Advisory working parties and other groups may be established to provide advice or technical input on specific matters. These groups support the Council’s work but do not have decision-making authority.

All decisions are taken by councillors at formal Council or committee meetings, and responsibility for those decisions remains with the Council. This structure ensures that advice can be considered openly while accountability is clearly maintained.

Ways to engage with the Council

Engagement helps the Council understand local views, identify issues, and consider evidence and experience alongside its statutory responsibilities.

Members of the public are welcomed to engage with the Council through recognised routes, including:

  • attending Council meetings and taking part in public participation where permitted;
  • responding to consultations or engagement activities; and
  • being invited to take part in advisory working parties for specific projects.

Participation in advisory roles is by invitation only, and appointments are made by resolution of the Council.

Council documents explained

Each document type has a distinct purpose and status, and together they provide a clear framework for how members of the public can be involved.

To support transparency and clarity, the Council publishes governance documents in the following categories:

  • Policies – the Council’s principles, commitments, and rules, including policies on public participation.
  • Terms of Reference – the purpose, scope, and operation of committees and working parties.
  • Statements – public explanations of the Council’s approach or position in specific areas.
  • Forms – used where individuals are invited to provide information or express interest in participating.
